Agricultural Rehabilitation

Wellington Pit’s recent restoration work took place from April 2020 to May 2020 and included rehabilitating 8.28 hectares for agricultural use. As part of the overall plan, four of the site’s small ponds are being retained to serve as irrigation for the agricultural fields. As well, three hectares of land in the centre of the area have been reforested to link wooded areas to the west of the site with the Country of Wellington’s Little Tract forest that runs along the east boundary of the pit.

Moving forward

The aim of this effort is to create a wildlife corridor. Moving forward, there are plans to grow an assortment of crops on the remainder of the rehabilitated land, which for several years now has been used to grow soybeans and corn
